Writers Sarah Butler and Joseph Coelho reflect on an innovative programme of writers’ residencies from 2009-12 which worked with young peaclogoople, traders at Whitecross Street Market and Turkish-speaking women in Islington. Sarah and Joe will read from publications created as part of the project and discuss their experiences at Fix, Whitecross Street, EC1, Monday 13 May, 6-8pm.

6-8.30pm Central Library – Story Queens – children’s writers Meg Rosoff, Karen McCombie, Sally Nicholls, Annie Dalton and Kaye Umansky talk about their latest books, about their experience of writing for girls and how to engage them. Mairi Kidd, MD of Barrington Stokes will talk about publishing for reluctant and dyslexic readers. The event will be chaired by Nicolette Jones, Sunday Times Book Editor.

For Word2013 Apples & Snakes present Tales Beneath Your Feet a series of walks & talks with storyteller Helen East. Walks take place on the 18, 19 and 25 May; and storytelling events on 20, 23 and 27 May. Click here for details.

join storyteller Nick Hunt at Parasol Unit for Phantom Fuel – a family workshop – £5 per family 2.30-4pm;

or join in with an afternoon of knitting and poetry at Spinning Yarns, and inter-generational event at Platform from 2-5pm presented by All Change’s B Project and the Platform Young Creative Producers.

A twinkling morning at Central Library

twinkleeventThe Mayor of Islington, Councillor Jilani Chowdhury, the Inspire! Young Parents group and Paul Lyalls, Word2013 Poet-in-residence entertained 60 under 5’s, parents and grandparents with stories and songs to launch Twinkle Twinkle Little Bus at Central Library on Friday 10 May. The book, written by the young parents is now available to borrow from all Islington Libraries.

Day 7 – Word2013:

First ClassThroughout this year’s festival a selection of outstanding artists and organisations are delivering projects with Islington schools. Amongst the projects taking place…

English PEN bring First Class Post which sees young people in Islington secondary schools exchanging letters with young people in other countries joining together in ‘global classrooms’. House of Illustration present Picturing Poetry bringing poet Francesca Beard and illustrator Merlin Evans to Ashmount Primary School to create a book of poetry. Free Word’s Translator in Residence – Canan Marasligil is exploring and creating comics as part of We Have a Voice! in 3 Islington secondary schools … and much more!

Today’s Free Word of the Day – is concerned with buried memories and can be found in a centre, which keeps, cares for and shares Islington’s memory and heritage treasures!
