Today at Finsbury Library... the daytime sees Primary school children will enjoy wonderful rhymes, riffs and yarns from some extraordinary Apples & Snakes poets as part of SPIN; whilst evening from 6-7.30pm, brings an amazing Write Start-Playwriting workshop from Spread the Word.
Day 7: A Focus on Young Voices
Wednesday 7 May: 6.30pm @ Free Word Centre: Trust & New Technology Join Free Word for the third in a series of debates about trust and young people. This time, we’re looking at trust and new technology. We’ll be asking our audience and a panel of experts to share their views on state surveillance, privacy, and the choices we make about sharing our personal data online. Book here
7pm: Unheard Voices @ Platform The culmination of exciting collaborations between outstanding poets, young people and secondary schools across Islington,this performance will present original works created by new and previously ‘unheard voices’ and leading artists Inua Ellams, Charlie Dark and Simon Mole from Apples and Snakes. Day 6: Launch for Granta 127: Japan
Tuesday 6 May: 7pm – Granta 127: Japan @Free Word Centre
This special issue of Granta, published simultaneously in Japanese and English, features work by emerging Japanese authors alongside new writing about Japan from its visitors, residents and neighbours. Day 3, 4 & 5: Leaves on trees & Page to Screen!
3, 4 & 5 May: This Bank Holiday weekend why not take time out in the park. Islington’s Greenspace team invites you to come sit and read amongst the trees that have been specially wrapped for Word2014. Across Highbury Fields discover trees individually wrapped with letters written by primary school students as part of the Cityread 2014 WW1 Commemoration. The Book Wraps will be on display throughout May.
Or fancy a movie inspired by a great book? Come along to the Saturday Social Film Club – ‘From Page to Screen’ at Platform Saturday 3 May, 1pm for tea & cake, followed by the film (a surprise) – free of charge. (Suitable for anyone aged 12+) Part of a series of intergenerational events brought to you by North London Cares, All Change and Cubitt Educationsupported by Islington Giving.
Sunday 4 May: A Necklace of Raindrops – that keeps the owner dry; a tiger that runs faster than the wind; a house that stands on one leg and a granny who sews magic – these are just some of the objects and characters delight in this storytelling event with Bronia Evers, based on the captivating collection of modern fairy tales by Joan Aiken.
